king of Phthia, Argonaut and Calydonian hunter

Eurytion

Eurytion is a king of Phthia in Greek mythology who appears among the Argonauts and the hunters of the Calydonian Boar. He matters because his story is tied to that of Peleus, whom he welcomed and whose father-in-law he became.

The myth

According to tradition, Eurytion was the son of Actor, though other accounts make him the son of Irus and Demonassa, and he is also called Eurythion. He sailed with the Argonauts and vowed to let his hair grow until he returned home.

When Peleus fled Aegina after killing his half-brother Phocus, Eurytion purified him at his court, offered him a third of the kingdom and gave him his daughter Antigone in marriage. Together they went to Calydon to hunt the boar that ravaged the land, but during the hunt Peleus threw a spear that accidentally struck and killed his father-in-law. After fleeing again, the hero was purified by Acastus at Iolcus.

Trivia

A vow of long hair. During the voyage of the Argonauts, Eurytion vowed to let his hair grow until he was home again.
A rejected compensation. Peleus sent a herd of cattle to Phthia as compensation for Eurytion's death, but it was refused and the animals wandered wild in the mountains.
