king of Arabia or Ethiopia, son of Tithonus and Eos

Emathion

Emathion is a figure of Greek mythology, a king of Arabia or Ethiopia according to the sources, and a son of the mortal Tithonus and the goddess Eos. He appears mainly in stories about the labours of Heracles, whose passage through his land ended in his death.

The myth

According to the tradition, Emathion was the son of Tithonus and Eos, the goddess of the dawn, and he ruled over Arabia or Ethiopia. When Heracles crossed his territory on his way to the garden of the Hesperides, Emathion tried to block his path, and the hero ended up killing him.

After Emathion's death, Heracles handed the kingdom of Ethiopia to Memnon, Emathion's brother. The genealogy allows for a variant: another character named Emathion, perhaps the same one or perhaps a different one, appears as the brother of Dardanus and the son of Zeus and Electra.

Trivia

Two Emathions. The Emathion who was the brother of Dardanus and the son of Zeus and Electra may be the same figure or a different one. The sources do not settle the question.
