Trojan warrior of Greek mythology

Demoleon

Demoleon is a Trojan warrior in Greek mythology, son of the counselor Antenor and the priestess Theano. His death at the hands of Achilles during the Trojan War makes him a minor figure, though with a distinctive story.

The myth

According to tradition, Demoleon was a tough defender of Troy. He came from a peaceful family that believed Helen should be returned to the Greeks. For this reason, the Achaeans spared his house, since his family had welcomed Odysseus and Menelaus when they came to Troy as envoys.

The Iliad recounts his end: Achilles killed him beside the body of Iphition, striking him on the temple through his bronze-cheeked helmet. Later tradition adds that his family founded the city of Patavium, modern Padua, after fleeing Troy.

Legacy

The asteroid 18493 Demoleon, in the Jovian group of asteroids, bears his name.

Ancient sources: Homer's Iliad mentions him as a Trojan warrior killed by Achilles.
